Background Checks

The following background checks are typically required by your prospective employer and/or a nanny agency.

Social Security Verification: This check verifies that the Social Security number was issued to the same person using the number and identifies any other names associated with the number.

Criminal History This is the most common check performed on a prospective nanny and should be expected by any person intending to care for children as a profession.

Driving records Employers want to know that you are a safe and responsible driver, especially if you will be in charge of driving their children on a regular basis.

Credit Reports Credit reports can tell an employer a lot about the maturity and values of an individual.  If your report shows defaulted loans and car repossessions, your future employer may question whether you are mature and honest enough to handle the everyday care of children. They also may worry about your creditors harassing your at your place of employment, i.e., their home.  This check is not done on a regular basis but is requested by some employers.

Drug Testing: This is not frequently required but is occasionally requested by certain agencies and employers.
